Saint-Emilion is truly considered the “cradle of Bordeaux wines”. After all, the vineyards came here with the Romans! Of course, it was a young wine, in no way comparable to the great wines that are produced here today.

The area on which the medieval town was subsequently built gained its greatest fame at the time of the arrival of the hermit monk Aemilianus. Thanks to him, a monastery was founded here, and then the largest monolithic church in Europe was carved into the rock. By the way, you can visit it with us privately.

The next period when Saint-Emilion becomes popular and rich is the period of English ownership of Aquitaine. You can learn more about this on our excursion to Bordeaux.

An excursion to Saint-Emilion is an ideal trip to get to know the Bordeaux region!
